Legal advice

Government funded support
The government funded group for help on leasehold law is www.lease-advice.org. It was formed to help inform people about the 1993 Leasehold Reform and Urban Development Act, has a team of solicitors who will answer questions and make clarifications, and its free! However there have been objections about its bias because although funded by the tax-payer they have held seminars for freeholders and managing agents on how best maximise revenue – even though this would be at leaseholders’ expense!

The website has good information about leasehold law and if you’re not sure how to interpret your lease, they can help with that. But they don’t take on cases. If you’re thinking about extending your lease they have a useful calculator that gives an outline cost. But it doesn’t factor in escalating ground rents (where the ground rent increases periodically).

Facebook
Waltham Forest Leaseholders
The Facebook group has over 1,000 members and is a great place to ask about lease extensions, buying the freehold, or just the history of Warner flats.

National Leasehold Campaign
The campaign to abolish leasehold, formed in 2017, is now a nationwide forum of over 32,000 members. It has organised demos, petitioned Ministers & MPs, and gathers data through surveys. The Facebook group is a great place to get advice and feedback. You can join and subscribe to their newsletter here.
